Cold-chain temperature logging that flags sustained breaches and keeps the alert even if the process crashes.

A fridge drifts warm between checks

Dede is a composite user, shown to illustrate the problem.

Dede runs a one-person cheese counter. UK FSA HACCP practice expects her to check and record fridge temperatures, so she writes them on a clipboard twice a day. Morning and evening. In between, nobody is watching.

A compressor can falter overnight. A door left ajar warms a cabinet for half an hour. The clipboard shows two tidy readings and nothing wrong. An inspector sees the same gap: hours with no record, and no way to prove the cheese stayed cold the whole time.

Manual checks catch the moment you look. They miss everything that happens when you do not.

Readings in, breaches flagged, alert that survives a crash

1

Readings land continuously

Sensor readings stream in and go straight into TimescaleDB, a time-series store built on Postgres.

2

A continuous aggregate does the math

A TimescaleDB continuous aggregate rolls the raw points up by the minute, so the breach query runs over compact buckets instead of every reading.

3

Excursions get flagged

An excursion is counted when a sensor stays over 5C for a sustained stretch of 10 minutes or more. A brief blip when you open the door does not count.

4

The alert outlives the process

The alert is driven by Temporal, which checkpoints its work. If the process crashes mid-run, Temporal resumes from the last step rather than dropping the alert.

Here is one replayed day from the dashboard. Two excursions on fridge-01, 43 min over the line in total.
